“It is perhaps difficult to believe, but more than once I have felt what it is like to be the most diverse person. I was one of the first women in the House of Representatives that became mother while there were no maternity leave arrangements.”
Minister of Defence Ank-Bijleveld Schouten demonstrates that diversity goes beyond gender. “It is about culture, religion, sexual orientation, education, etcetera. Wearing an uniform does not mean that we all have to be the same. The uniform represents the power of the group. But the group is at its strongest when you let people be who they are and do what they are good at”. The Minister says diversity and inclusiveness are part of the ‘moral fitness’ of the Dutch Defence organisation.
